Smallcase is a thematic investment platform that allows users to invest in curated portfolios of stocks and ETFs.
This independent product case study explores how to improve activation rates for new and passive investors who struggle with decision paralysis when faced with too many investment options.
To understand why investors hesitate or avoid using investment platforms, I conducted primary research combining qualitative interviews and quantitative validation.
I spoke with 3 early-career professionals (20-25 minute sessions each) with varying investment exposure - SIP investors, stock investors, and crypto-first investors. These conversations revealed behavioral patterns and emotional barriers that numbers alone wouldn't capture.
One participant's experience captured the core problem:
I stopped investing because I didn't feel confident making decisions on my own once my brother got busy.
To validate whether interview insights represented broader patterns, I conducted a survey with 13 respondents - mixed investors, with the majority being SIP users.

The survey validated all interview patterns - investors prefer low-effort approaches, have moderate to low decision confidence, and find choice overload genuinely stressful.
Guidance and simplicity were strongly desired across the board.
Based on research insights, I identified several interconnected problems contributing to activation hesitation.
When I want to invest my money, I want clear, trustworthy guidance, so that I can confidently choose without spending hours researching.

Through RICE scoring, I evaluated three hypothesized problems:
P1: Event-driven investors struggle with insufficient funds at final checkout (Medium confidence)P2: New explorers struggle choosing first investment from wide range of options (High confidence)P3: Portfolio optimizers get irrelevant suggestions from generic benchmarks (Medium confidence)Addressing choice overload and lack of guidance had the highest potential impact on activation.
I explored multiple solution directions to address the core problem of decision confusion and choice overload.
Reach: 2, Impact: 3, Confidence: 2, Effort: 2 = RICE Score: 6
Reach: 3, Impact: 3, Confidence: 3, Effort: 3 = RICE Score: 9
The Guided Entry System scored highest because it directly solved the root cause - users needed structured decision support, not just social validation or fewer random options.
The Guided Entry System introduces a structured onboarding flow that transforms Smallcase from an open marketplace into a guided decision platform.
Entry trigger → 5-step quiz (< 60 seconds) → Profile summary → Personalized roadmap → Invest or edit preferences

After completion, users see their profile summary and a curated shortlist of 3-8 smallcases matched to their inputs.

Improve activation rate by ~15% in 6 months for new/passive investors by reducing decision confusion at the investment selection stage.
